The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) of the Ministry of The Attorney General and Legal Affairs (AGLA) in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) conducted a Seminar entitled “How to Make a Living from Apps” from November 11-13, 2019. This event targeted stakeholders and various professionals in the software and app development sector to engage them in discussing how intellectual property impacts the sector. Apps are potentially valuable knowledge creations and most of that value is underpinned by a robust intellectual property system. It is believed that the content will enhance the ability of the sector to exploit and leverage the intellectual property rights in such creations. Trinidad and Tobago has been included as one of only three (3) countries, including Kenya and the Philippines, benefitting from a three-year WIPO project under the Committee for Development and Intellectual Property targeting the apps sector.

The opportunity was taken to also have a presentation of the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center. Trinidad and Tobago has signed an agreement with WIPO for its citizens to access the services of this Center. It provides access to neutral, international and non-profit dispute resolution with efficient alternative dispute resolution (ADR) options. WIPO mediation, arbitration, expedited arbitration, and expert determination enable private parties to efficiently settle their domestic or cross-border IP and technology disputes out of court.

Presenters from the IPO and WIPO met with the Honourable Attorney General on November 13, 2019. The meeting took place at the Ministry of the Attorney General and Legal Affairs, AGLA Tower, Government Plaza, corner London and Richmond Streets, Port of Spain.
